Ducati celebrates 30 years of 916; launches Hypermotard

Ducati is celebrating three decades of its iconic 916, with the launch of a Panigale V4 SP2 Anniversario edition. To be limited to just 500 units worldwide, the bike is a homage to a true icon of design and the world of racing.

Unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show, its beauty begins with a livery, created by Centro Stile Ducati, that features the iconic tricolour on the fairing, white numberplates and the number 1 – all of it in a modernised style.

The black portion of the upper half cowl recalls the air ducts of the original 916. The lower tank, also black, is a strong reminder of the racing world. Finally, the tank cover features the laurel logo, in the same gold colour as on that bike.

The logo on the fairing, which on the first model was in silver with gold outline has been revised and updated, now looking almost 3D. The Panigale V4 SP2 30th Anniversary 916 is offered in single-seater configuration only.

It features a billet aluminium steering plate with laser engraving of the model name and individual bike number, and is offered with a certificate of authenticity and a dedicated bike cover. Look aside, there’s plenty of performance enhancements as well.

Built to full SP2 specs, this limited edition model adds a racing fuel tank cap machined from billet aluminium, air ducts for cooling the front brakes, an exhaust heat shield, wings with a double profile design and a front mudguard in carbon fibre.

Carbon fibre five-spoke wheels, Brembo Stylema R callipers, and an STM EVO dry clutch create a lighter, more agile bike that has immense stopping power and greater fluidity in all phases of riding.

The adjustable foot pegs in billet aluminium allow the riding position to be adapted to any physique, and enable the use of the standard Ducati quick shift, which can be configured either as a traditional gearbox or with a racing pattern.

Ducati’s Data Analyser+ data acquisition system allows the rider’s performance to be monitored, which is handy given the bike is delivered with a track-ready kit, which includes billet aluminium caps for removing the rear-view mirrors, and an open carbon clutch cover.

Australian pricing and availability is yet to be confirmed.

Alongside the icon that is the special edition Panigale, the Italian bike maker has revealed its first single cylinder motorcycle – the Hypermotard 698 Mono.

Set to be priced at $22,800 ride away, and due here in Q2 of 2024, the 698 Mono is equipped with the new Superquadro engine, offering 57kW of power. Built with the sole objective of thrilling through the curves, it’s designed to be a load of fun to ride.

Its engine is derived from the twin-cylinder of the 1299 Panigale, from which it inherits the 116mm bore piston, combustion chamber, titanium intake and steel exhaust valves and Desmodromic distribution.

Its electronic package, unrivalled in the category, allows less experienced riders hone their Supermotard craft (a bike famous for its drifting capabilities), with the ABS Cornering setup boasting specific settings to manage “sideways riding” on the track.

The same package allows more experienced riders to fully exploit the high power of the Superquadro Mono engine and the stable and rigorous chassis. Added to all this is a design that is simple, aggressive and looks visually light, creating a slim and sleek motorcycle.

The high and flat seat, the high front mudguard, the sharp tail and the rear number plates are all elements that confirm its attitude. Another unique element are the double silencers mounted at the top, on the sides of the tail.

The super compact LED headlight integrates the DRL function with a double “C” light profile, while the same light signature is found in the rear light. Four riding modes (Sport, Road, Urban and Wet) feature, with everything managed with a 3.8-inch LCD cluster.

Four levels of ABS (a Ducati first) are also provided with two of these integrated into the Slide-by-Brake functionality, allowing safe power sliding. Tipping the scales at 151kg dry, it sports a lightweight upside-down Marzocchi front fork that’s fully adjustable.

A double-sided swingarm works via a progressive linkage, with a fully adjustable rear shock absorber. Riding on 17-inch Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres, the front brakes feature a Brembo M4.32 radial calliper on a single 330mm disc. At the rear is a single 240mm disc.

The standard model will be offered in Ducati Red with a powder coated frame. RVE and A2 versions will be offered overseas, but have not yet been confirmed for Australia. For more information, contact your local Ducati dealer.
