California Superbike School – Level 4 SMSP

The ultimate level of California Superbike School was upon us, Level 4 – but was it truly the end or just another beginning in the experience of our journey at the riding academy that is California Superbike School.

You see Level 4 isn’t the end of the journey, but the beginning of your personalised experience after completing the fifteen core fundamentals learnt in Levels 1,2 and 3.

Those fundamentals learnt in previous levels set you up with the required cornerstones and skills to get down to business in Level 4 and have the highly qualified California Superbike School coaches start to iron out the bugs specific to your individual riding.

The day set out remains the same with a mix of 5 coaching and track sessions, however apart from your assigned on track coach, Level 4 students also score an off track consultant who will work with your coach to assign tailored drills to the riders needs.

Of course the prerequisite to be able to attend and participate in Level 4 is to complete the first three levels. In simple terms you can not go straight to Level 4. The other really cool part about Level 4 is that you can do it as many times as you like and on the day we attended there were multiple participants back for their second, third and even fourth times.

Our trusty steed for the day would be the sublime BMW S 1000 RR M Sport edition that of course we had completed Levels 1,2 and 3 aboard. We can not rate the performance and ease of use of this sports bike enough, not only was it fantastic on the road but an absolute blast on the track with the bike being pushed to its limits on the track for which it was built.

SMSP provided the oppertunity to ride the full 3.93km Grand Prix circuit, a track which comprises a mix of sweeping corners and tighter more technical turns, providing plenty of room and opportunities for overtaking and growing one’s skills.

The day would commence with the customary safety briefing before we would form into our groups and head for the pit garages. There we would mingle with like minded folk who were also completing Level 4 before our first track session.

Session one would see us hit the track with a drill designed to see where our riding was at. From there we would be designated a drill based on our own requested areas of improvement and of course coach feedback.

Each rider also gets a turn being filmed before watching the feedback with the coach and off track consultant to pick up further improvement in their track riding. We could feel through the coaching and off track consulting significant improvement as we dialled in our technique.

Sessions 1,2 and 3 were dry with good riding conditions, however we had one eye on the sky and weather forecast as not so good Sydney conditions were forecast for the afternoon.

DeJa’Vu, just like when we completed Level 3 the skies opened before the beginning of our fourth track session. A delay resulted before we braved the conditions and headed out in the wet.

It was cold wet and miserable, but the good news were we are still riding motorbikes. As we made our way around SMSP in the wet we were afforded the oppertunity to hoan our wet weather riding skills.

Towards the end of this session the weather started to worsen further and the call was made to call it a day. So, there you go two attempts at California Superbike School at SMSP and the Sydney weather turned on us both times.

However, we still had the opportunity to get on track and have a heap of fun and get invaluable coaching by the team. Throughout the journey there was noticeable improvement in our riding skills and speed for that matter and we would recommend to anyone that this is truly one of the best learning and enjoyable experiences you can have on two wheels.

We now plot our next opportunity to head back to the track with the team from California Superbike School because as we have stated before we are addicted and totally hooked. Not only does the California Superbike School increase your speed and skill but it improves your bike control which of course will make your motorcycling a whole lot safer and more enjoyable.
