BMW R 12 & R NineT Launched At Deus Ex Machina

BMW Motorrad have lifted the covers off their new R 12 and R NineT models at an exclusive event held at Deus Cafe in Camperdown. The event marked the arrival of the new models into Australia that were first announced back in May of 2023.

Joel Simondson, Head of Marketing Australia for BMW Motorrad revealed the bikes to an enthusiastic crowd in attendance with the bikes immediately striking a positive impact amongst the audience.

A brief technical presentation was carried out before the big reveal and we must say the bikes look mint in person and we can’t wait to get our hands on the new bikes to road test in the coming months.

The evening allowed different sectors of the industry to come together for the unveiling of the new models in a purposely selected location of iconic custom reputation. On hand was a talented artist who was painting a custom tank live throughout the evening whilst a rock band played and guest mingled.

The 2024 R 12 Nine T will be available in three model variants with pricing starting from $23,990 and going through to the range topping Option 719 at $30,590. The R 12 will also be available in three model variants with pricing starting from $20,210, with the range topping Option 719 starting from $27,590. All prices exclude on road costs.

Both bikes combine the authentic and beefy character of the boxer engine and the design language of traditional motorcycle eras, with innovative technology and a modular concept that offers the rider maximum customisation options.

The R 12 nineT embodies the spirit of the roadster that began its journey in 2013, carrying forward its archetypal look, timelessness, and high customisation qualities. At the same time, the new model honours BMW Motorrad’s 100th anniversary.

Offering a nod to the powertrain configuration in the new BMW R 1300 GS, the air/oil-cooled 1170cc boxer engine delivers 80kW of power in the R 12 nineT and 70kW of power in the R 12. The chassis has been completely redesigned and features a new airbox.

The left-mounted “twin pipe” exhaust system with two rear silencers and a reverse cone design caters to both the desire for a classically designed, sporty roadster and a cruiser. Both models feature a new tubular steel spaceframe.

This frame differs from the previous R nineT series, which had a front and rear main frame, with the new model equipped with two analogue round instruments for speed and rpm, a USB-C port, and a 12V socket.

In the case of the R 12, its instrumentation is limited to a speedometer, but the rev counter can be retrofitted as an optional extra. On the nineT, the aluminium tank with brushed and clear-coated side panels, the seat, and the tail-hump create a rising, dynamic line.

The improved ergonomics are due to the 30mm shorter and narrower fuel tank in the rear area. The rider is positioned closer to the handlebars, benefits from improved knee contact, and has a more front-oriented seating position on the motorcycle overall.

On the new BMW R 12, the steel tank, reminiscent of the so-called “Toaster Tanks” of the 1970s, emphasises the typical design language of a cruiser in a classic teardrop shap,e and forms a descending line in combination with the standard solo seat and rear wheel cover.

The large 19-inch front wheel and the small 16-inch rear wheel complement this harmoniously. The classic cruiser design is also reflected in the relaxed seating position with low seat height and wide handlebars.

The BMW R 12 nineT comes in Blackstorm Metallic, San Remo Green Metallic and Option 719 Aluminium. The R 12 will be available in Blackstorm Metallic, Aventurine Red Metallic and Option 719 Avus Silver Metallic.
