2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide ST

Hail the new king of the baggers. Harley-Davidson’s CVO Road Glide ST is the hero of the 2024 model line-up, billed as the pinnacle in bagger performance and it most certainly doesn’t disappoint.

With a sharp focus on performance, the 2024 CVO ST is built to bring the track to the road. Unlike traditional CVO motorcycles from the brand which bring custom with a plethora of comfort accessories for the ultimate touring experience, the CVO ST only has the rider at mind with a stripped-down persona heightened by animalistic instincts.

Harley-Davidson celebrates 25 years of their Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) in 2024 and have released the ST alongside a first ever Pan America CVO (not available in Australia) to mark the milestone.

Featuring a host of custom performance touches, the ST raises the bar for performance baggers available directly off the dealership floor. This will not suit all potential CVO buyers though and interestingly as a side note all of the Australian allotment of bikes were sold out well before landing in the country.

The Road Glide CVO ST builds on the very good bones of the 2023.5 CVO range released last year and of course the new era of Grand American touring bikes that have landed locally here in Australia in the last few months.

Straight out of the create and onto the bitumen it doesn’t take long to realise that the ST is a serious bit of Milwaukee muscle. The 121 cubic inch Milwaukee power plant pushes 126Hp or 94kW and an earth shattering 193nm of torque to the pavement which is totally exhilarating and smile inducing as you twist the throttle fully on.

The soul of the ST doesn’t feature VVT like other CVO models in the range, instead a high output variant of the 121 is utilised to produce more horsepower and torque than the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine with a high-performance camshaft, race-inspired high-performance air intake and elevated 5,900 RPM redline.

There are selectable ride modes including for the first time on a Harley-Davidson a Track and Track Plus Mode to help you get all the power to the tarmac and truly maximise the performance of the ST. Each ride mode affects characteristics of power delivery, engine braking, Cornering Antilock Braking System (C-ABS), and Cornering Traction Control System (C-TCS) settings.

We found ourselves selecting track mode when out in the open roads and especially on our ride from the Central Coast out through Kulnura onto Wollombi before hitting the Putty Road.

This loop proved the perfect setting to also test the fully adjustable premium Showa suspension fitted on the front and rear of the ST. Road conditions are not exactly silky smooth on the section of road between Kulnura and Wollombi but the suspension handled the conditions very, very well.

The front suspension on the ST features 47 mm Inverted 1×1 Forks with adjustable preload, compression damping and rebound damping, the true beauty of this set up is the ease of which the bike changes direction especially when pushing hard and holds its line beautifully through a corner as you feed the throttle.

On the rear of the ST Emulsion suspension with adjustable preload, compression damping and rebound damping is utilised again ensuring the bike tracks true with no wallowing which has been present in past Harley touring bikes when pressing the matter through a corner.

Once on the Putty and hitting the twisty stuff the ST was brilliant, better than any Harley that had come before it. And while we were amazed and having the time of our life holding firm through corners with the ST showing no signs of any wallowing at the rear and powering out of corners, we couldn’t help but wonder if there was one performance item the ST missed.

The ST boasts oodles of grunt, it’s the best handling tourer/bagger that the motor company has built, however we would have loved to have seen the addition of a quick shifter. The quick shifter would have finished that ultimate performance bagger hype and truly executed the package to truly make the bike best possible version of itself.

Braking is thankfully upgraded with performance dual Brembo M4.32 four-piston radially mounted callipers and 320mm wave rotors fitted to the front of the ST providing really nice feel when pulling the 380kgs of muscle and angriness up. The rear features a single axially mounted four-piston Brembo calliper with a 300mm rotor.

Still, we digress, did we mention that Harley-Davidson have removed an additional 11.3kgs from the weight of the bike by utilising forged carbon fibre components. There is nothing on the bike that is unnecessary, no pillion seat no pillion foot pegs shorter rider floorboards the ST is all about performance.

The traditional Road Glide mini ape hangers are gone as well and replaced with a more performance orientated setup (which can be purchased optionally on the standard model) which puts the rider in a much more aggressive riding position.

The new switch block assembly is carried over which feels nice to the touch and looks a lot sharper and more modern than those feature on previous generations of Harley cruisers.

However, we did find the cruise control a little fiddly which wasn’t a deal breaker for us as we enjoyed feeding the throttle with the harmony it produced from its oval-shaped lightweight titanium pipes.

Of course, there is a Fosgate Stage II premium audio system which is controlled via the new 12.3-inch TFT display which features the Skyline IOS system which is the electronic display that houses the speedo, rider info, navigation and full smart phone integration.

But we didn’t really have to much interest in all that as nice as it is, we were interested in unleashing the beast and powering the ST down the road. This bike is cooler than ice and madder than a snack with its head chopped off and that is a good thing.

This bike was a risk for Harley-Davidson taking a solid best-selling product and taking it an even more extreme direction than previously explored. Cashing in on inspiration from the hugely popular King of the Baggers racing series in the U.S, the CVO ST has proved an immediate sales success locally, but even more importantly this is without doubt the best bike the motor company has produced for sale to the general public.
