2024 CFMOTO 450MT Launch Ride

Adventure bikes continue to grow in popularity here in Australia and the latest player in the market is CFMOTO, with their impressive 450MT. Positioned to be accessible at the entry point to the market, we took the new model into the Victorian High Country to test the mettle of the 450MT and see if it is indeed the easiest and best way to begin your adventure bike journey.

We were to be lead by the expert team at All In Dirt Bike Adventures who knew the trails like the back of their hands as we took our 450MT’s through varying off-road terrain in freezing conditions as well as some great bits of tarmac over three days of sensational riding.

It is important to note that the bikes provided to the media were bog stock standard and had not received any aftermarket accessories at all. In fact the only thing that may have differed on the bikes form those on the dealership floor was that we ran 26psi tyre pressure due to the nature of our ride being predominately off road with splashes of bitumen.

It’s a pretty impressive bike, out of the box, with  fully adjustable KYB front forks, and a rear shock that allows preload and rebound adjustability. There’s also LED lighting, tubeless tyres, a 5.0-inch TFT display, switchable traction control and rear wheel ABS deactivation.

The CFMOTO 450MT also comes packaged with the bike maker’s TBOX system and Ride app. And so it was that we kicked off our initial day of riding, in freezing conditions, leaving CFMOTO headquarters for Yarra Glenn, via the highway.

This highway stretch gave us an opportunity to start to become familiar with our bikes before we would hit more challenging terrain after lunch and get our first taste of the 450MT off road.

Our initial impressions, ergonomically the 450MT felt good, there is a nice, relaxed rider triangle even for a gent on the larger size being approximately 180cms and 100kgs.

The 450MT appeared to be well suited to touring and as a nice touch if you are looking to fork out a little extra for panniers, the aluminum panniers can be removed and utilised on the 800MT if you decide a bigger bike is required.

The adjustable windscreen is manually adjustable and super easy to use on the fly and provides reasonable head buffeting as well. The 449cc parallel twin produces 32.5kW and 44Nm of torque which will have the 450MT cruising at highway speeds comfortably at around 6,500rpm.

It is a standout on this bike as it has been on other models that have sported this engine in the CFMOTO lineup including the 450SR and 450NK. The exhaust gives a pleasant thumpy note as you wind on the throttle and power is delivered nicely across the rev range with just a hint of hunting in the bottom end.

Our first off road session would see some nice dirt trail morph into rocky terrain and sandy surfaces before we hit some nice slippery mud. It was probably some of the most challenging terrain of the entire ride and the durability and toughness of the 450MT was put on show as a few bikes ended up on their sides.

We would make our way out of the trails as light started to fade and find ourselves on one of the few roads, we were familiar with in Victoria, that of course being the Black Spur.

As we tipped in and out of corners constantly changing direction as we weaved our way towards our accommodation for the night the 450MT handled itself well, although at times you could notice it may have been a touch top heavy which can be expected sometimes with an adventure bike.

We were greeted by icy seats and temps in the vicinity of 1 degree the next morning and to be honest even though we had managed to put on many many layers of clothing the idea of riding in this cold wasn’t absolutely appealing – we were more than happy to spend the day in the pub by the fire, however duty called.

The rubber was quickly removed from our foot pegs as we again prepared to head straight into the dirt, in fact we didn’t even make it a kilometre up the road, and we were back in the bush and that is where we would remain for most of the day.

Another day of mixed terrain laid before us, fire trails, steep rocky terrains and of course more slippery mud. We flicked the bike into off Road Mode which is displayed clearly on the 5-inch TFT by hitting a single button on the left-hand side switch block which is a very simple process. This deactivates rear abs and traction control, and we were away.

For us Day 2 was an absolute highlight, spending more time with the bike off road through a range of varying conditions and tracks, the bike shone for not being intimidating or hard to handle. The bike is perfect for novice adventure bike riders, while still being a great experience for those who are more accomplished.

For reference the front 41mm KYB upside-down fork and rear KYB monoshock suspension offer 20 clicks of adjustment with our setup being set at approximately 12 clicks. The bikes suspension handled the conditions well and if we had any wish at all it would have been the front brake having slightly more feel through the span adjustable brake lever (clutch lever is also span adjustable).

We would eventually arrive in Bonnie Doon after a last tarmac section that was spent dodging Kangaroos at dusk. It had been a big day, but a great day completing some memorable tracks and trails aboard the 450MT.

After filling our bellies, a few refreshing beverages and a good night’s sleep, we were to depart Bonnie Doon in even colder temperatures than the morning before and head for home. There would be a more even spread of dirt and tarmac for the ride and again some of the tracks were magic and a great test of truly how capable the 450MT is.

That day included travelling to a beautiful lookout above Murrindindi in the State Forest, across a variety of surfaces, before our return to where we started, at CFMOTO’s Victorian HQ. It was a round trip of just over 458km, according the the smartphone app.

The CFMOTO TBOX system and Ride app provides smartphone connectivity, Bluetooth and navigation. You’ll also find ride stats, remote vehicle status, and a fuel indicator. It also allows the ability to conduct over-the-air software updates.

Priced from $9,490 ride away in either Zephyr Blue or Tundra Grey and backed by a 3-year warranty, the 450MT is learner-legal and represents exceptional value. It’s already popular, with more than 500 examples sold in pre-sales alone.

All-in-all, it’s an adventure bike that weighs less than 200kg in full running order, with a 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear and 220mm of ground clearance – packaged up to be rider friendly and offer exceptional bang for buck.

The big question is it is as good as its arch rival the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450?. Both are very good propositions that are going to increase the interest in this category exponentially, and to be honest we are going to sit on the fence and let the prospective punters decide for themselves as there is no right or wrong answer.

Our test bike was provided as part of the Australian media launch by CFMOTO Australia. Images provided by Fstyle Photo.
