2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE

In a highly competitive middle weight adventure market, the 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is a serious contender and is second to none in providing serious bang for buck. Forget what you’ve known in the past about the Suzuki V-Strom this is a serious off-road capable adventure tourer.

Powered by a liquid cooled 776cc parallel twin engine, which provides 62Kw of power and 78nm of torque, this new engine has a 270-degree crankshaft which makes it sound more v-twin than a parallel twin and features the new Suzuki cross balancer which comprises of a new primary balancer which assists in providing smooth strong torque.

The constant mesh 6-speed gearbox is paired with a bi-directional quick shift system that allows the rider to do smooth clutch-less gear shifts which is very handy in tricky off-road conditions. The clutch is designed to work like a slipper clutch and is light and smooth.

Fully adjustable Showa forks on the front and a Showa rear shock with rebound and a handy preload adjuster which can be quickly adjusted by turning a dial, make setting up the suspension both convenient and easy. Suspension travel is a healthy 220mm both front and rear, which is appreciated on the roughest of tracks, we never managed to bottom out the suspension.

Excellent braking performance starts on the front with lightweight Nissin dual-piston front brake calipers and 310mm floating dual discs. The rear sees a single piston pin slide Nissin caliper with a 260mm disc.

Dirt inspired 21-inch front and 17-inch rear anodized gold wire-spoked wheels help the overall package provide superior handling on the dirt and come fitted from the factory with Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tyres 90/90-21 & 150/70-17 respectively. Our test model was fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres which are more dirt orientated than the standard fitting tyres and provided plenty of grip and confidence on the dirt.

The 5-inch TFT multi-information display is well laid out and easy to read even in bright sunlight, you can also choose between day and night modes and will also automatically change dependent on current lighting conditions if you set it to auto.

The traction, engine map and ABS settings are clearly displayed on the main screen along with a large gear indicator and rpm tacho which flashes when the engine rpms reach your chosen preset speed.

The 800DE is equipped with the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System which comprises of electronic control systems designed to support the rider under any riding conditions features include Traction Control, SDMS, Ride-by-Wire Throttle, Easy Start and Low RPM Assist.

Traction control has 3 levels of intervention with the highest level 3 really stepping in under hard acceleration to prevent wheelspin and the front-end lifting. Alternatively you can turn it off completely and it will turn into a wild beast. A new traction control setting called G Mode allows for a good amount of traction loss making power slides out of corners on dirt feel controlled and stable.

ABS comes with 2 levels of strength with mode 1 providing minimal intervention and the ABS can be switched off completely on the rear for improved controllability on dirt when you require to slide the rear wheel into corners.

Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) gives the rider a choice of 3 different engine mapping settings to match current conditions or rider preferences. Mode A (Active) gives the most aggressive power and torque settings with Mode B (Basic) giving a more linear experience and Mode C (comfort) has the softest throttle response and gentle torque curve.

We hit up some great trails, dirt and tarmac roads testing out the 800DE in a wide range of conditions and it didn’t disappoint. The engine and throttle response are so smooth with a good amount of torque and power we regularly just left the Suzuki in a higher gear and used the torque to quickly get it up to speed without being super aggressive, making the bike a lot of fun on the road and very manageable off road.

The engine is a standout feature and we were seriously impressed with how it performs. A reasonable seat height of 855mm for adventure standards really helped in the tighter dirt tracks where you notice all 230kg. Thankfully momentum is easily achieved thanks to the excellent suspension and plenty of ground clearance at 220mm. The Showa forks soaked up everything on the rough dirt tracks and performed very well on the tarmac.

Ergonomics were designed with off road use in mind which is quite evident with an aggressive looking beak, lower fork guards and 21-inch front wheel together all help give that rally look. The one-piece seat was very comfortable on long stints and provided a natural upright seating position.

The handlebars are at a comfortable height in both the seated and standing positions, when in the standing position it feels natural and it’s easy to squeeze your legs and attack corners while standing. We would like to see slightly bigger foot pegs which would help with stability in the standing position especially off road.

No cruise control, standard on the bigger capacity 1050DE, is disappointingly not even an option on the 800DE. We think any bike capable of long-haul trips should have cruise control. The screen is good for visibility off road however at freeway speeds you will wish it was taller. Thankfully Suzuki has you covered with a 90mm taller screen available as an genuine accessory option.

The LED headlight looks very small and not aesthetically pleasing, it does put out a good amount of light but is annoyingly high and doesn’t light up the road directly in front you, we would option a set of fog lights to help light up those dark roads more. LED tail light and turn signals fit in nicely with the rest of the design.

The handlebar mounted controls are well placed and easy to use, changing rider modes is a breeze on the fly. The hand guards are very flimsy and offer no real protection from anything but the wind so you would most certainly be upgrading those.

The well-placed USB port allowed and allowed us to easily charge our phone and there is space for a 12v socket under the seat which can be added at an additional cost.We averaged 24km/L over the course of the ride with a mixture of slow dirt tracks to open country highways which would see you get well over 400km out of the 20-litre tank full.

Service intervals are due at every 6000km/12 months and comes with a 2-year unlimited kilometer full warranty and Suzuki will increase that to 3 years if your bike is serviced by a authorised dealer.
