2023 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob

It has been a little while since we last hung out with Harley-Davidson’s Fat Bob. One thing’s for sure though, when we do get together with Fat Bob a good time is always had with the softail’s unconventional attitude and hunger to hit the road in its own aggressive way, with its take no prisoners persona.

Dressed up in Redline Red, one of 3 colour options available for the 2023 model, even the flashier exterior colour doesn’t soften the muscular stance of the Fat Bob. It still serves up tough styling cues in sinister black, highlighted by the flat dragster style bars and singular LED headlight bar which you will either love or hate.

Fat Bob is a down and out thug that is not preoccupied with looks, but has an eye for performance and only has one desire – the road. Powered by a beckoning 114 cubic inch Milwaukee eight motor, Fat Bob is stripped down to the bare essentials for the rider to hit the road.

That soul of Fat Bob produces 69kW @ 5020rpm and 155Nm of torque @ 3500rpm. Boasting 1868cc of blacked out Milwaukee eight muscle, the Fat bob has its own unique 2 into 2 shorty mufflers which produces the gnarl, or as much of a gnarl that stock pipes can produce of Fat Bob.

Of course there is a range of aftermarket accessories available from either the Harley-Davidson spare parts and accessories bible or you can head to to many aftermarket retailers to make Fat Bob even angrier and more unique to suit your own personality and style.

Hell if Fat Bob was living in our garage with a nimble in Harley speak running weight of just 306kgs and wheelbase of 1615mm, we may even invest in one of the motor companies drool worthy 135 Screamin’ Eagle crate motors just to make Fat Bob a little more wicked.

Spend some time with Fat Bob in the backroads and your fondness for Bob will only grow. You see Fat Bob’s appearance as a tough uncompromising urban cruiser masks a few exciting traits, especially in the handling department.

Sporting an inverted-race style front fork design, utilising single cartridge technology that Harley-Davidson claim improves steering input, and braking and handling performance, Fat Bob is a blast in the corners.

in fact, Fat Bob has a cult like following around the globe with owners loving the ride provided by one of the better handling softails in the range. It easy to understand why with the front end fork design matched to the much improved rear adjustable mono shock introduced to the softail range a few years back.

For reference, Fat Bob features 31 and 32 degree lean angles to the left and right, as well as 120mm ground clearance, however it feels much better than that when pushing through the twisties.

Fat Bob also has the ability to come to a stop more than adequately making use of a 4-piston fixed front and 2-piston floating rear setup that offers great feel and bite for the rider.

The forward controls are within easy reach, the stretch to the drag bars is just right and puts you in the perfect position to hit the corner, or just cruise and take in the sights. As the marketing folk would say, the ergonomic triangle is very good on the Fat Bob.

All the necessary buttons and switches are easy to use, feel good to the touch, and are nice and big so don’t distract from rider focus. There is a large analogue speedo too, which sports LED warning lights and a display screen, both of which do the job nicely.

Fat Bob makes use of its 13.6 litres of fuel, delivering the rider an average of 280km per fill of the go go juice which is reasonable, of course this will vary depending upon how much of a good time you and Fat Bob are partaking in.

Without doubt Fat Bob carves its own identity within the Harley-Davidson softail family. With unique styling and a more performance orientated ride, Fat Bob delivers character and substance to reinforce its position as a Harley favourite.

Fat Bob is available in 3 colours Redline Red, Grey Haze and of course Vivid Black and is priced from $32,995 ride away with the Redline Red and Grey Haze attracting a $365 premium over the Vivid Black colour option. Fat Bob is also backed by the factory’s 2 year unlimited kilometre warranty.
