2023 Energica Ego+ RS

Perched atop the Energica motorcycle range is the performance focused Ego+ RS. It’s an adrenaline fuelled sports bike with sleek racer looks. Astoundingly quick, this Italian rocket is a pure electric juggernaut.

Having ridden the EsseEsse9+, we were pretty keen to climb aboard the Ego+ RS to see exactly what was on offer. Immediately addictive is the best way we can describe the experience. Its jet fighter-like soundtrack is intoxicating.

From the smooth, uninterrupted linear power, to objects becoming blurred as they flashed past, and the abundance of red and green flashing lights on the TFT dash to reinforce the lunacy, everything about this bike will entice you. We were hooked, in an instant.

Never mind the fact it can sprint to 100km/h in 2.6 seconds. That’s just an added bonus. For the record, the Energica Ego+ RS produces 126kW of power, with an arm ripping 222Nm of torque. It’s enough to well and truly get the heart pumping.

It’s also fair to say this is the quickest two-wheeled EV we’ve ridden to date. Being fully electric, range is an important factor too, and the Ego+ RS is good for a claimed 230km between charges.

That does of course depends on a heap of variables, like wind, riding gradient, the weight of the rider, if there’s a passenger, and which riding modes you select. The Energica does utilise regenerative braking to help give charge back to the battery and extend range.

There’s even an Eco option among the selectable riding modes; the others are Urban, Sport and Rain. You will need to apply some degree of self-restraint too if you hope to maximise the distance you can travel.

Much like the EsseEsse9+, this bike has a subtle way of reminding you to behave too. You see, the battery range is displayed constantly through a nice clear and easy to navigate TFT display that hosts a bevy of other rider information.

Accelerate hard and you get to watch battery range decrease, while getting out of the throttle or braking shows you the charge going back up as the bike’s tech works it’s magic to return energy.

Riding through suburbia, this becomes a game to try and maximise battery life in the Ego+ RS’s high energy lithium polymer (Li-NMC) battery. The battery pack is an intelligent device, comprising dozens of sensors and electromechanical devices as well.

It’s designed to ensure maximum performance and safety in all environmental conditions. Energica has created a cooling system which ensures the battery life is optimised as well. It does all add to the weight of the bike though, and there’s plenty of that at 260kg.

To put it into perspective, that’s about the same weight as a petrol powered Harley-Davidson Pan America adventure bike. All that heft has another consequence, with the battery unit positioned towards the front of the bike.

Its location means the handling characteristics are different to a normal sports bike, particularly when riding a little more enthusiastically. This was most prevalent as we pushed the bike harder through some twisty sections of road.

The front feels heavier and takes some adjustment to get used to. Pair that with the lightness of the rear end, especially when braking hard. The bike feels like the tail is bouncing as you decelerate.

Ergonomically though, the Energica Ego+ RS is what you would expect from a super sports bike. You’ll find yourself tucked up, with your wrists copping most of the your body weight.

It does a more than decent job at lane filtering though, and powering away at a green light is grin inducing. With a decent battery range, sports bike performance and good looks, the Energica will win a lot of admirers. Zero petrol costs will help its cause too.

It won’t be for everyone though, and is most likely to appeal to early adopters of EV tech who crave performance. Those that aren’t quite ready for the electric revolution will find solace in the internal combustion engines of other bike makers instead.

The 2023 Energica Ego+ RS is a premium motorcycle and is priced from $53,696 plus on-road costs. It’s by a 3-year 50,000km warranty.
