The Light White/ M Motorsport livery hits the mark, being unmistakingly BMW whilst still delivering a modern interpretation of the classic colour scheme which pays tribute to the brands rich motorsport history. There is no disguising that BMW have induced this model to be nothing less than a Panigale slayer.

Track performance aside, one of the great character traits of the 2023 BMW S 1000 RR M Sport is it’s road manners and indeed how well behaved and manageable it is for the everyday tarmac without the need to unleash all of the bikes 154kW and 113Nm of torque, if you can resist.

It is probably best described as being a little Jekyll and Hyde with the bike being well behaved in the lower rev range before turning into an unhinged monster higher in the rev range or perhaps that is just the character traits of the rider as enthusiasm builds with the bikes performance levels.

Producing an additional 3 hp over the outgoing model, the new model S 1000 RR utilises a high performance BMW ShiftCam four-cylinder engine. The airbox is one of a number of new components taken directly from the M RR and ensures excellent air supply to the power plant, whilst  the cylinder heads with new channel geometry and reinforced bearing brackets also find themselves taken from the M RR.

For increased straight line speed the chain ring has more teeth now again further componentry taken from the M RR, it now has 46 teeth instead of 45 and assists in the S 1000 RR reaching a claimed top speed of 303km/h. Standard Shift assistant Pro (quick shifter) has also been improved and optimised and works beautifully for precise gear changes.

Power delivery is sublime, with the rider never feeling out of control as they twist their right wrist to where their limits take them. Under hard acceleration the downforce and willingness of the front end is evident.

For us the front end of the BMW S 1000 RR was a real standout and highlight of the overall package. It inspired so much confidence and we can not wait to get this bike to a race track in the second half of the year and push the BMW even harder and further than we were able to on the road.

Part of the reason for the stickiness of the front end is the new composite plastic winglets. Designed to generate up to 17.1 kgs of aerodynamic downforce – depending on speed, the downforce counteracts the want of the front wheel to lift under hard acceleration and enables a more direct conversion of drive power into acceleration.

Handling has also been improved for 2023 with the addition of the M chassis kit which now comes standard. New frame recesses ensure greater lateral flexibility. The steering head angle has been lowered to 0.5° to 66.4° and decreased the fork bridges offset 3 mm to 26.5 mm, which results in the front wheel being even more precise.

45mm Upside-down telescopic forks feature on the front of the S 1000 RR which have spring preload and adjustable stages of rebound and compression. This package allows 120mm of travel. The rear suspension setup utilises an aluminium swing arm with adjustable compression and rebound damping and spring preload allowing 117mm of travel.

Overall combined with the abundance of super bike tech available the setup works extremely well in road conditions. Braking performance is also very very good as you would expect of a bike of this calibre.

Twin 320mm disc brakes with 4 piston fixed calliper carry out the stopping duties up front, whilst a single 220mm disc brake with a 1 piston calliper provides the stopping power on the rear. Of course BMW Motorrad ABS Pro system is overarching which features  individual tuning of the braking depending upon ride mode selected.

BMW’s intuitive and easy to navigate 5 inch TFT display provides the control centre for choosing commands and even offers riders 4 options for displaying info to the rider. The screen has be decluttered this year to make seeing key critical info even easier on the fly. Add to the package niceties such as cruise control and heated hand grips and S 1000 RR M sport delivers thrills and creature comforts.

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR M Sport is truly worthy of the term super bike, offering riders both on the road and track a truly exhilarating riding experience with precise control and distilled aggression that only a German marque could deliver with such brilliant engineering.
