2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR

Magnificent. A simple term that’s perfectly descriptive of Triumph’s 2022 Speed Triple 1200 RR. From the sublime elegant styling to the sheer performance dynamics, there’s simply not a lot we didn’t like about this motorcycle.

A pure thoroughbred, with supermodel looks, it has a proper premium finish, and wherever you cast an admiring eye there are classy details to ensure it feels exotic, yet not overdone.

The harmony that radiates when you twist the throttle with your right wrist captivates the soul as you sprint from well within the speed limit to in excess of that legalised suggestion marker, with minimum effort.

Performance from the Speed Triple’s liquid cooled 12 valve DOHC inline 3-cylinder engine is brilliant and everything you would expect of a bike of this pedigree. Power is instantaneous and will have you grinning like a punter who has just backed a Melbourne Cup winner.

Producing 132.4kW and 125Nm of torque, the power is nothing less than addictive and super responsive. There is good pick up all the way through the rev range, with a characteristic punch across the entire torque curve.

As intoxicating as that sweet sound from the iconic triple powerplant is though, we still would be headed for an aftermarket exhaust, just to take it absolutely to the next level. A quick shifter is matched to a six speed gearbox too.

It gets the job done clinically, and smoother than velvet. The clutch is also nice and featherlight when pulling away from a stationary start. Of course there is a full suite of the latest rider aids, and sensational fully adjustable Ohlin’s suspension.

There’s a bunch of selectable riding modes too, including Road, Sport, Rain, a full Custom mode, and a Track mode. They’re all accessible via the 5.0-inch TFT display. Although not as large as some of its competitors, it works, and it displays info exceptionally well.

You can also connect to the My Triumph app via Bluetooth on your smartphone to manage functions such as navigation and phone calls, which are then integrated into the dash of the Speed Triple RR.

Triumph’s Speed Triple 1200 RR has a much sportier demeanour than its RS sibling too, a fact that is most evident in the ergonomics of the bike. The seating position is more race oriented, and with the clip-ons will have you leaning down over the tank and tucking in.

The front cowling is hot. In fact, in our humble opinion, the only way this bike could look any better is if it were layered in British Racing Green to pay homage to all that is iconic about racing heritage.

Splashes of light weight carbon fibre are found across the Speed triple 1200 RR and not only reinforce the focus on performance, but match perfectly to the crisp Crystal White paintwork.

It handles like it’s on rails, and is an absolute weapon when you ride it enthusiastically, particularly through the twisty stuff. The bike feels well planted and with the option to adjust suspension settings electronically, you can find your happy place with relative ease.

The 43mm USD front fork offers 120mm of travel and is paired with an Ohlin’s S-EC 2.0 OBTi system to allow for electronic adjustment of compression and rebound dampening on the front. On the rear an Ohlin’s mono shock with RSU linkage also allows 120mm of travel.

It too features the Ohlin’s electronic setup for adjusting rebound dampening and compression. Braking also ticks all the boxes, with a top spec Brembo package featuring ABS, carrying out the stopping duties.

Twin 320mm discs offer good feel and bite on the front of the RR, while on the rear a single 220mm disc is featured. Like most naked sports bikes, fuel capacity is limited and the Triumph sports just 15.5-litres of tank.

That should see you covering about 200km in-between stops, depending on your riding style. There are a range of premium features included on the Speed Triple 1200 RR too, including cruise control, which works nicely and is easy to use.

An LED lighting package and self cancelling blinkers also features, but you won’t find heated grips. Weighing in at 199kg, the 2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR takes the fight to the Ducati Streetfighter V4 S and the BMW S 1000 R M Sport.

The Speed Triple RR is in illustrious company there and it needs to be exceptional to compete at this end of the market. The good news is, it does. It’s a stunning motorcycle, that not only looks good, it delivers performance and handling that is intoxicating.

Priced form $32,390 ride away, the 2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR is available in two colours; Red Hopper/Storm Grey, and Crystal White/Storm Grey (as tested). The only real downside to this bike is the fact we had to give it back.

Our test bike was provided by Triumph Australia. To find out more about the 2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR, contact your local Triumph dealer.
